Colby Covington Gets Paralleled With American Pie’s Stifler as Leon Edwards Offers Honest Opinion on Beating His Opponent in UFC 296: “Makes It Easier”

Leon Edwards does not like Colby Covington and he has made it abundantly clear. Rocky will defend his welterweight title against #1 ranked Covington in the main event of UFC 296 on December 16 at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas. This will be Edwards’ first title defense against a fighter other than former champion Kamaru Usman.

The 35-year-old Covington, on the other hand, may be looking at his third and potentially last title shot, which is why Edwards seems to be sparing no expense in talking trash at the champion. In a recent interview, the Englishman discussed Colby Covington’s mind games and his assessment of Chaos as a person.

Ahead of his much-awaited bout against Covington, Leon Edwards is on a media tour to promote the UFC’s last pay-per-view event of 2023. In an interview with SB Nation, the 32-year-old was asked what he thought about Covington’s attempts to get in his head by talking trash about him.

Edwards agreed that Chaos had been trying to knock him off his game by getting in his head. However, he did not seem to take the American’s insults very seriously, commenting that it was quite different from the trash talk he grew up with. He went as far as comparing him to the American Pie franchise character Stifler.

“Yeah 100% [he’s trying to get in my head]. I think he’s like a different kind of banter to like where I’m from. And the way I grew up, you know, like it just remind me of like a typical American jock, you know. You know, it’s like Stifler from American Pie, you know, that kind of person. [He] just like talks sh** and it’s okay, like whatever, you know,” the welterweight champion said.

It seems Edwards is not aware that Colby Covington plays a deliberately brash and outspoken villainous character in order to antagonize himself to the fans. And the Englishman seems to have taken all of Covington’s insults to heart and made clear just how low an opinion he has of Chaos.

“Me and him would never be friends,” says Edwards

Edwards even went as far as to say that he could never see himself becoming friends with Covington even after he hangs up his gloves. The welterweight champion seemed to have a really low opinion of Chaos but admitted this made it easier for him to train hard and hurt the American.

“I feel like even when I stop fighting like me and him would never be friends. Like we’re just two different human beings and two different men. And our morals is different as a man and that’s it. And it makes it easier for me to train, makes it easier for me to go out there and punch a hole in his face,” he added. Who do you think will win in their bout?
