49ers Announce Major Brock Purdy Injury Update
After signing a massive contract extension with the San Francisco 49ers this offseason, quarterback Brock Purdy has played in just two games in 2025 while dealing with a lingering turf toe injury.
Purdy has now missed four straight games, and while the team initially hoped he would return in Week 8 against the Houston Texans, that comeback never materialized. However, head coach Kyle Shanahan has delivered a promising update on Purdy’s status ahead of the 49ers’ Week 9 matchup against the New York Giants.

Kyle Shanahan Confirms Brock Purdy Is Not a “Long Shot” for Week 9
Purdy initially suffered his turf toe injury during the 49ers’ Week 1 victory over the Seattle Seahawks, an ailment expected to sideline him for two to five weeks. The quarterback attempted to return in Week 4 against the Jacksonville Jaguars but aggravated the injury during that contest, forcing him back to the sidelines.
The re-aggravation has proven more problematic than initially anticipated, as Purdy has now missed six of the last seven games. Shanahan has been cautious with his franchise quarterback, understanding that turf toe injuries can be particularly tricky for quarterbacks who rely on push-off power from their big toe.
However, with Purdy practicing in a limited capacity for the past two weeks, Shanahan believes a Week 9 return is realistic.
“I don’t think it’s a long shot,” Shanahan said. “I know he’s doing better, and we’ll see how he’s doing on Wednesday. Hopefully, if he’s doing good, he’ll get in some reps.”
As Shanahan reiterated, there is no definitive timetable for Purdy’s return. The team emphasizes that medical benchmarks, not calendar dates, will determine his availability. Practice participation from Wednesday through Friday will be the key indicator, but early expectations are that Purdy should be ready for Sunday’s matchup.
When healthy this season, Purdy has been excellent. PFSN’s QBi metric ranked him as the league’s third-best quarterback heading into Week 8. In his two starts, he totaled 586 passing yards and four touchdowns, though he also threw four interceptions.
Mac Jones has kept the 49ers afloat in his absence, going 4–2 as a starter. He’s thrown for 1,597 yards with eight touchdowns and five interceptions, ranking 15th in PFSN’s QB Impact metric.
Jones has cooled off over the last two weeks, totaling just 345 yards with two touchdowns and two interceptions, but Purdy’s potential return gives San Francisco a timely boost as they look to take control of a competitive NFC West.
