‘I Threw a Racket, He Did the Same’ — Alexander Bublik Reveals How His Son Made Him Realize the Harsh Reality About His Outbursts

‘I Threw a Racket, He Did the Same’ — Alexander Bublik Reveals How His Son Made Him Realize the Harsh Reality About His Outbursts

Alexander Bublik is famous for his flamboyant personality and unpredictable on-court behavior. 2025 has been one of his best seasons so far. The Kazakh won four ATP titles and reached a career-high ranking of World No. 16. However, he still struggles to keep his emotions in check when matches don’t go his way.

What Did Alexander Bublik Realize About His Outbursts on Court?

During a recent interview with Tennis Channel, Bublik revealed the moment in his life that made him reconsider his unexpected antics. When he saw his three-year-old son, Vasily, copy him by pretending to throw a racket, that moment made him realize how his actions on court were influencing his son.

Bublik said, “My son’s growing up, maybe I sometimes think that I don’t like the way he behaves because he saw me. For example, I threw a racket on court, he did the same.”

“So maybe this is all stacking up and you’re like, ‘Okay, I won’t do that’. And then, it’s easier than someone telling me, ‘Oh, don’t do that because that’s bad for your tennis,’ because then it comes from you. So that’s what probably stayed there,” he added.

He also emphasized how such changes should happen naturally and not because of some external force.

“We have to grow up. We have to mature in a way. It comes naturally. I think the best thing that happens to a human being happens naturally. You don’t need to force yourself, break yourself to prove, even for yourself, that you are capable of something, or you need to change this or that. So for me, it’s more about natural changes that came to my life,” the Kazakh said.

It seems like even with this personal growth, Bublik is still one of the most volatile players on court. At the Paris Masters, he beat Alexei Popyrin 6-4, 6-3 in his opening round. After the match, the Kazakh went straight to the chair umpire and skipped the handshake with Popyrin.

Bublik refused to shake hands because Popyrin won two lucky net cord points. Instead of offering the traditional apology, which is considered part of tennis etiquette, the Australian celebrated with a fist pump. That reaction seemed to annoy Bublik, who later said, “There’s a code, there’s some kind of etiquette. If someone doesn’t adhere to it, why should I adhere to another?” he said during an interview with Championat (translated from Russian).

The two already had some tension brewing in April this year. At the 2025 Madrid Open, where Bublik won in straight sets, the two were seen exchanging some words as well. Looking ahead, the Kazakh will now take on Corentin Moutet in the second round at the Paris Masters.
