Myles Garrett is NOT going to be traded to the Philadelphia Eagles this offseason.

The door on this tantalizing but always unlikely outcome was slammed shut on Sunday morning with the Cleveland Browns officially signing Garrett to a multi-year contract extension worth $40 million annually with $123 million guaranteed.

That’s one serious pay day. The next highest-earning edge rusher on an annual basis is Maxx Crosby, who recently signed to a $35.5 million per year. The next highest-earning edge rusher on a guaranteed basis is Nick Bosa, who signed a deal with $88 million guaranteed.

$40 million annually is what Matthew Stafford makes as the 15th-highest paid quarterback. Only six quarterbacks have signed contracts with more guaranteed money than Garrett got.

And so it’s not difficult to see why Garrett changed his tune on demanding a trade to play for a contender.

While it’s a bummer that the Eagles won’t be able to acquire Garrett this offseason, they’re hardly left without options to add an edge rusher. Khalil Mack, Harold Landry, and Trey Hendrickson are among established players that Howie Roseman could look to pivot to.

The Eagles are also happy that Garrett will be staying in the AFC if he’s not coming to Philly. Both the Washington Commanders and Detroit Lions were rumored to be interested in a Garrett trade.

Another angle to consider when it comes to this Garrett news is that it’s not a very good development for the Dallas Cowboys. This deal certainly doesn’t make a Micah Parsons contract extension more affordable.
