Sterling (26-5 MMA), the promotion‘s former bantamweight champion, will be returning to action for the first time since earning a unanimous decision victory over Brian Ortega this past August in Shanghai, China. Prior to that triumph, ‘Funk Master’ had dropped a decision loss to fellow 145lbs contender Movsar Evloev at UFC 310.

Meanwhile, Youssef Zalal (18-6-1 MMA) was most previously seen in action this past October, where he scored a first-round submission victory over Josh Emmett (see that here). ‘The Moroccan Devil’ has won eight fights in a row, with 7 of those 8 victories coming by stoppage.

Round one of the UFC Vegas 116 main event begins and Youssef Zalal opens things up with a nice jab. Aljamain Sterling responds with a body kick and then a low kick. Zalal is making it a point to take control of the center of the Octagon. ‘Funk Master’ circles along the outside and then leaps in with an overhand right. Sterling avoids a jab and then shoots in for a takedown. He doesn’t get it but is able to press Zalal against the cage. ‘The Moroccan Devil’ breaks free from the clinch and gets back to range. Aljamain Sterling with a hard calf kick that sends Youssef Zalal to the canvas. ‘Aljo’ quickly pounces on him and is able to take half guard position on the ground. Good body shots from Sterling. Zalal looks for a triangle choke submission. Aljamain quickly avoids and begins working some shots from full guard. Zalal looks to scramble. Sterling keeps him on the ground and lands a pair of solid knees to the body. The horn sounds to end the opening round.

Round two of the UFC Vegas 116 headliner begins and Aljamain Sterling comes forward quickly. He pressures Youssef Zalal towards the cage and then shoots in for a takedown attempt. Youssef Zalal doing a good job of defending and eventually breaks free and back to range. ‘Funk Master’ continues to apply pressure here in the second frame. Zalal with a nice left hand counter over the top. Sterling with a hard low kick and then a jab. The fighters clinch and Aljamain Sterling lands a jumping knee to the body. He pushes Zalal back up against the cage and lands another knee. Youssef Zalal breaks free and gets back to range. ‘Funk Master’ chases right after him and lands a 1-2. Zalal answers with a stiff jab. The former bantamweight champ replies with a left and then a low kick. Zalal swings and misses with a hook. That allows Sterling to get in on a takedown, and he quickly takes the back of his opponent and drags him to the canvas. Good shots from Aljamain Sterling. He moves to the back of Zalal and locks in a body triangle. Big shots from ‘Funk Master’. He’s all over Youssef Zalal at the moment. 20 seconds remain int he round. Good left hands from Aljamain. The horn sounds to end a big round for Aljo.

Round three of the UFC Vegas 116 main event begins and Aljamain Sterling comes out quickly. He lands a jab to the body. Youssef Zalal circles and looks to keep Aljo at bay. ‘Funk Master’ dives on a takedown attempt. He gets his arm wrapped and is able to plant Zalal on his back against the fence. ‘The Moroccan Devil’ locks up a guillotine choke and uses it to sweep Sterling and take top position. Zalal is working from half guard now. Sterling gets back to full guard. Youssef Zalal postures up and lands a right hand. Aljamain Sterling responds with a pair of up kicks to the body. Zalal moves to the back of Sterling. He locks in a body triangle. 60-seconds remain in the third round. Zalal looking for a choke. ‘Aljo’ looks to scramble but Zalal still has him pinned. The horn sounds to end round three.

Round four of the UFC Vegas 116 headliner begins and Aljamain Sterling comes forward quickly. He lands a big combination and then a hard low kick that nearly sends his opponent down to the floor. ‘Aljo’ jumps on Zalal’s back and is able to take him down to the floor. Sterling immediately locks up a body triangle and begins unloading some good left hands. Sterling with a rear-naked choke attempt. ‘Funk Master’ continues to work for the choke. Zalal somehow escapes the hold but Sterling still has his back. Two minutes remain in the round. Aljamain Sterling continues to keep Youssef Zalal backpacked. He moves to full mount and has 70 seconds to work. He’s landing some good shots. Zalal is able to scramble up to his feet but he’s eating some hard shots in the process. The horn sounds to end round four.

The fifth and final round begins and Youssef Zalal is going to need something big after being dominated last round. He comes forward with a 1-2 and then a good knee to the body. A nice left hand now from Zalal. Aljamain Sterling ducks a punch and drops for a takedown attempt. He pushes Youssef against the cage and looks to secure a body lock. Zalal continues to remain upright, but ‘Funk Master’ still has him pressed against the cage. Midway point of the final round now. Sterling secures the takedown. ‘Aljo’ once again is able to take the back. He begins working some good left hands. He continues to unload on Zalal while smiling. The horn sounds to end the fight.
