Will Saints QB Tyler Shough take the next step up in this career defining season?
With how early it is in Tyler Shough’s career, it’s weird to say that one of the most important years of his career is already happening, but it is. Last season was great for Shough because he earned the trust of the staff, other players, and the fanbase.
He got it done by playing really well on the field and doing it with the chips stacked against him. Being that type of underdog who dealt with major injuries throughout college, was disrespected in the draft process, and lost his first QB battle in the NFL, gets people ready to support the player. It goes to another level when Shough has been so vocal in the offseason and is clearly loving his life in Louisiana. But there’s still a chance all of this comes tumbling down.
Shough is still very much an unproven commodity in the NFL, eventhough he had some great moments last season. Like any other second-year QB, there could be a step back due to the pressure that he is facing, especially in New Orleans with such a devoted fan base. If things go wrong, it’s very easy to blame the QB. Also, the 2027 NFL Draft is an excellent QB class on paper, so if things do go wrong, the Saints can easily pivot and get his replacement in the first round. Is this the likely outcome? No.
The Saints have made a significant investment in building around Shough this offseason and have filled every single position of need on that side of the ball. They added RB Travis Etienne, LG David Edwards, TEs Noah Fant and Oscar Delp, and WRs Jordyn Tyson, Bryce Lance, and Barion Brown. On paper, compared to last season, this offense is filled to the brim with talent and potential, and HC Kellen Moore should also improve after gaining experience in New Orleans.
Shough is truly set up to succeed next season, and even if he plays at a level similar to last season, that should result in a good number of wins. But with time to settle in and a full offseason, it should be expected that Shough can take the next step, becoming the franchise QB.
