UFL kicker earns tryout with Saints

One of the major headlines this spring has been the number of players from the United Football League garnering interest from NFL franchises after finding success in the “feeder” organization. As the New Orleans Saints continue to work on improving their special teams performance this offseason, they have brought in another tryout player with that very goal in mind. This time, it is Tanner Brown, a kicker from the Louisville Kings, working out with Kellen Moore and the rest of the Saints’ staff.

The 26-year-old placekicker played collegiately at Oklahoma State University, where he was named a team captain, made the 2022 All-Big 12 second team, and was a semifinalist for the Lou Groza Award. Brown has always been consistent in his kicking, but more recently gained notoriety for his power. He shone in big moments, drilling long-distance field goal attempts with near-perfect accuracy en route to helping the Kings win this year’s UFL championship.

Not only was Brown an excellent field goal kicker, but his big leg also allowed him to thrive as a kickoff weapon. He accumulated nearly 4,000 total yards on kickoffs this season, averaging over 62 yards per boot.

While it remains uncertain how long Tanner will stay on the Saints roster, his presence certainly is a good sign of New Orleans’ understanding of an area of weakness from last season and exploring options to improve. Brown will look to challenge Irishman Charlie Smyth, who finished 2025 with just 75% accuracy on field goal attempts, ranking 38th in a league of 32 teams.
