Daniel Cormier weighs in on Sean Strickland’s recent admissions about mental struggles

UFC commentator Daniel Cormier has chimed in on Sean Strickland’s recent comments.

‘Tarzan’ has been out of action since his split-decision loss to Dricus du Plessis in January. That defeat ended Sean Strickland’s time as champion, after just a few short months. Since then, the former titleholder has called for a rematch but has yet to schedule a return to the cage.

That’s probably for the best. Earlier this week, Sean Strickland took to social media, with a video discussing his mental health. In the video, the former champion noted that despite his fame and fortune, he’s still dealing with mental issues that he can’t get beyond. That’s something that struck a nerve with Daniel Cormier.

Earlier today, the UFC Hall of Famer discussed Sean Strickland’s video on his YouTube channel. There, Daniel Cormier compared the former champion’s comments, to Alexander Volkanovski’s post-fight comments following UFC 294. ‘The Great’ famously stated that he was dealing with depression following a first-round knockout loss to Islam Makhachev.

In Daniel Cormier’s view, fans and fighters need to treat Sean Strickland’s plea for help with the same energy. Whether they like ‘Tarzan’ or not, the former champion needs help. Cormier feels that the MMA community should rally around Strickland as a result.

UFC commentator Daniel Cormier reacts to Sean Strickland’s mental health comments

“Sean Strickland is a guy that has a very, very dark past.” Daniel Cormier stated on his YouTube channel earlier today, discussing the former champion’s video. “We all know that. But that dark past has served to make him a world champion fighter and a guy that is willing to go through so much adversity. He said that he’s rich, but that he can’t get past the hurdles mentally. I want to make sure that we as the consumer, treat this in the same manner, in which we treated Alexander Volkanovski when he spoke about his issues mentally.”

He continued, “Whether you love him or you hate him, we have to look at the human being. When Volk said that he was in his own head, we all rushed to speak to him and his strength. We need to make sure we do the same thing for Sean Strickland. Sean Strickland’s , that’s a plea for help. So we as the mixed martial arts community, should rush to his side again. Just like we did for Alexander Volkanovski.”

What do you make of these comments about former UFC champion Sean Strickland? Do you agree with Daniel Cormier?
