Jayson Werth’s horse Dornoch wins Belmont Stakes

Jayson Werth has gone from champion on the diamond to champion on the racetrack.

The racehorse that Werth co-owns, Dornoch, won the Belmont Stakes, the final leg of horse racing’s Triple Crown, on Saturday at Saratoga Race Course. Dornoch put Werth into the winner’s circle 16 years after he was a part of the Phillies’ 2008 World Series title team. The race was moved to Saratoga Springs, N.Y., this year because Belmont Park is undergoing a renovation project.

The 15-year big leaguer who retired in 2018 said prior to last month’s Kentucky Derby that he’s “a nervous wreck” before a race, although co-owning a thoroughbred and watching it race gives him “an adrenaline rush like never before.”

Dornoch finished 10th in the Derby, but Werth’s adrenaline must be flowing tonight. Considering how amped we’ve seen him get on the baseball field before, it’s pretty easy to envision how pumped up Werth must be on this triumphant day.
