University of Texas football player Nick Brooks, a highly touted four-star offensive lineman, was arrested last week in Travis County on suspicion of driving while intoxicated. According to police reports, the 18-year-old freshman — who recently enrolled at UT after committing in August — was pulled over for speeding 47 mph in a 30-mph zone.

During the stop, authorities noted several signs of impairment. Brooks reportedly had bloodshot, watery eyes and admitted to consuming marijuana, telling officers he had smoked a “blunt” and used a “good” THC vape pen, stating he was “feeling it.”

Brooks also informed police that he had just left “Play,” a 21-and-over establishment in the area. Despite being underage, he claimed the venue “makes exceptions for UT football players.” More controversially, Brooks said he was on his way to take “two prospective players” to a nearby strip club — a statement that could raise questions regarding NCAA recruiting rules and program oversight.

Though police reported that Brooks’ speech was “mumbled” and “mushmouthed,” and observed that he was “swaying” and experiencing “body tremors,” they also noted he was “polite” and “cooperative” throughout the interaction. No alcohol was detected in his system at the time of arrest.

Brooks, a graduate of Grayson High School in Georgia, was a heavily recruited lineman with offers from 28 programs before choosing Texas. He is expected to begin his collegiate football career this fall.

The University of Texas has not yet released a statement regarding the incident.
