It has been one of the most popular races among triathletes over the past two years – if only because the race goes right through the heart of the metropolis – but Challenge Barcelona will undoubtedly become even more popular in the years to come: today Challenge Family and the local organization announced that the race is adding a particularly popular Middle Distance to its program.

The Middle Distance is not a real addition to the existing program though, as it replaces the distance previously raced in Barcelona: 1500-56-15. In addition to the announced Middle Distance (1900-88-21) , Challenge Barcelona will continue to organize a regular Sprint Distance.

Registration for Challenge Barcelona’s Middle Distance will open very soon. Present at the announcement was Challenge Family CEO Jort Vlam. “Challenge Barcelona is already an iconic event on the triathlon calendar. To be able to now add a middle distance race to the program is a great privilege. On behalf of Challenge Family and the athletes who will be inspired to race, I’d like to personally thank all those who have made this possible. We’re excited to bring longer course racing to the heart of one of Europe’s most spectacular cities!”

The Middle Distance offers a prize pool of $25,000 to professional athletes. In addition, the race – also for Age Groupers – counts as a qualifying race for The Championship. The swim course takes in one 1,900-meter lap from Mar Bella Beach. The bike course, 88 kilometers to be exact, runs over two laps between Barcelona and Mataró, along the coast and through the city center of the metropolis. Athletes will pass the world-famous Sagrada Familia, among others. The run course, also along Barcelona’s coastline, has three laps.

In addition to the Middle Distance and Sprint Distance, Challenge Barcelona organizes a Junior Challenge, Aquathlon and two Open Water Swims (1900 and 3800 meters).
