The Pittsburgh Steelers may be eyeing more than just tight end Jonnu Smith as they look to bolster their offense ahead of the 2025 season.

Just hours after ESPN’s Adam Schefter reported the team’s trade interest in Smith, NFL insider Jordan Schultz added fuel to the speculation by revealing that the Steelers have held “preliminary conversations with multiple teams” in pursuit of another offensive weapon. According to Schultz, Pittsburgh hopes to strike a deal “at some point,” though there appears to be no immediate urgency.

While the Steelers made a big splash earlier this offseason by acquiring wide receiver D.K. Metcalf, they also created a void by trading George Pickens to the Dallas Cowboys. That move left the team still searching for offensive firepower, though the target doesn’t appear to be limited to the wide receiver position. Their interest in Jonnu Smith—a tight end—suggests the team is open to adding versatile playmakers at any skill position.

Schultz’s use of the term “playmaker” leaves the door open for a variety of options, whether it be a pass-catching tight end, dynamic slot receiver, or a running back with receiving upside. With potentially 12 picks in the upcoming NFL Draft, Pittsburgh has plenty of draft capital to facilitate a trade if the right opportunity presents itself.

As the Steelers look to build around their evolving offensive core, all signs point to a front office willing to be aggressive in pursuing talent that can make an immediate impact.
