Report: Eagles had interest in Arthur Smith before he took Ohio State offensive coordinator job
Another OC candidate off the board … before it was ever publicly known he was in the running.
The Philadelphia Eagles had interest in former Pittsburgh Steelers offensive coordinator Arthur Smith before he decided to accept the Ohio State offensive coordinator position, according to a report from NFL insider Dianna Russini.
Smith “had been having conversations” with the Eagles and the Tennessee Titans (two teams with OC openings this offseason), according to her reporting.
It’s unclear if the Eagles formally interviewed Smith. But it’s not the first time the team has shown interest in him. The Eagles previously interviewed him for their head coach opening back in January 2021. It was said at the time that the Eagles were “really impressed” by him. Smith landed with the Atlanta Falcons instead, where he went 7-10 for three straight seasons to be fired with a 21-30 overall record. Smith then spent two years as the Pittsburgh Steelers’ offensive coordinator.
Whether the Eagles actually wanted Smith to replace Kevin Patullo or not, it’s all moot now because it’s not happening. He’s going to Ohio State to replace Brian Hartline (hired away as South Florida’s new head coach), who succeeded Chip Kelly.
