Robert Whittaker explains decision to move up to light heavyweight, reveals target return date
Robert Whittaker believes a move to light heavyweight is long overdue.
Whittaker announced his decision that his next fight will be at 205lbs and he’s hoping his debut happens in the summer. If Whittaker had his way, his goal is to make his light heavyweight debut in June.
“I’m locking in now,” Whittaker told Submission Radio. “I’m locking in for June. I want to get in there. I want to fight again. I want to fight in June at 205 most likely.”
Although Whittaker is a former welterweight, he knows his frame and size are perfect for light heavyweight. He also said he’s been using this time to add more muscle and size to his body.
Robert Whittaker reveals walk-around weight
Ultimately, even when Robert Whittaker was fighting at middleweight, he would walk around over 205lbs.
Whittaker revealed he’d weigh around 108 kilos, which is 238lbs, so he’s confident he’ll fit in nicely at 205lbs.
“I’m going to try and put on a little bit of muscle, but I’m not going to put too much,” Whittaker said. “I walk around heavy anyway. I’m heavy. I walk around like 107, 108 (kilos), just cruising. Obviously that’s not shredded, so I want to try and bring that back, shred up, just train fed, train fully fueled, and get the most out of my camps, and come into fight week feeling good for once.”
Whittaker also doesn’t want to hear about anyone saying he’ll be too small for light heavyweight.
“I’m going to give it a go. I know a lot of naysayers, small this, small that. Shut up, dude. I want to give it a go. I’m on the tail end of my career, so I’ve got to try rather than just thinking about what ifs,” Whittaker concluded.
