Daniel Rodriguez reveals what led to his arrest in Mexico: ‘They don’t play no games’
Daniel Rodriguez has opened up about his arrest in Mexico, which led to him being in jail for eight months.
Rodriguez was released from jail this weekend, and he shared videos of himself training in prison, thanks in large part to his cellmate, who Rodriguez claims ran the prison. Although Rodriguez was able to train, being in prison wasn’t easy, and he said it came as a true mistake.
“I crossed the border into Mexico and forgot I had a little bag of weed with me, man,” Rodriguez said to Ariel Helwani. “It was under an ounce, and I got pulled over at the line and checked. The border patrol were tripping over the weed, and I was thinking I was only going to be in there for the weekend, maybe a little bit shorter. But man, the laws over there in Mexico are way different, they don’t play no games. What I thought would be a little weekend, or maybe overnight, turned into eight months.”

Rodriguez said the border patrol had no idea who he was, and he knows there are chances to get yourself out of trouble in Mexico with cash. However, that wasn’t going to happen with the National Guard doing the search and arrest.
“Usually, there are opportunities to get yourself out of certain situations over there in Mexico,” Daniel Rodriguez added. “I had a wad full of cash with me at the time and was trying to see if I could catch a break. Because it wasn’t the police, it was actually the border patrol, the National Guard, they don’t play no games. I didn’t realize they take it so seriously. And they hit me with a smuggling charge. I had someone with me, and unfortunately, that person had to do the time with me… I feel really bad about that.”
Ultimately, after spending eight months in prison in Tijuana, Rodriguez was able to get out as he cut a deal. However, Rodriguez said it came at a price, but he’s just happy to get all this past him and return to fighting soon.
Daniel Rodriguez is 20-5 as a pro and riding a three-fight winning streak. He picked up a decision win over Kevin Holland last time out, after scoring a TKO win over Santiago Ponzinibbio and a decision win over Alex Morono.
