Phillips (12-5 MMA) will enter the bout looking to rebound, this after suffering back-t0-back unanimous decision losses to Rob Font and Vinicius Oliveira in his most recent Octagon appearances. Prior to those setbacks, ‘The Matrix’ had strung together three straight wins, including a submission victory over Marcelo Rojo.

Meanwhile, Charles Jourdain (18-8-1 MMA) is currently riding a two-fight winning streak, this after earning back-to-back submission wins over Victor Henry and Davey Grant (see that here). The Canadian standout, known as ‘Air’, has gone 3-2 over his past five fights overall.

Round one of the UFC Winnipeg co-main event begins and Kyler Phillips comes forward quickly with a left hand. Charles Jourdain throws up a flying knee that misses. Phillips gets in on a single leg and takes the fight to the floor. Jourdain locks up a triangle for a second, but Phillips quickly escapes and moves to side control. ‘Air’ quickly scrambles back to half guard. Phillips with a nice left hand and then a good elbow from top position. Jourdain scrambles and gets back to his feet. Kyler Phillips still has a hold of him against the cage. He is able to drag the Canadian back down to the floor. Phillips moves to side control. Just over two minutes remain in the opening round. Charles Jourdain looks for a guillotine, but Kyler quickly escapes and gets back to working some ground and pound. An elbow to the body by the American. Now a big one to the face of Jourdain. The control and patience Kyler is showing early is paying dividends. Charles Jourdain scrambles and escapes to his feet. He lands a nice straight left. A good knee to the body now from ‘Air’. He swings and misses with a right hook. The horn sounds to end round one.

Round two of the UFC Winnipeg co-main event begins and Charles Jourdain misses with a body kick. Kyler Phillips lands a nice right hook while ‘Air’ looks to close the distance. Jourdain with a body kick, but Phillips avoids and then forces a trip takedown. Not where the Canadian wants to be. Jourdain scores a sweep and gets back to his feet for a second, but is quickly dragged back to the canvas by the American. Another scramble and Charles is back up to his feet. Phillips with a right hand. Jourdain goes to the body. Charles Jourdain with a kick to the body. He misses with a flying knee attempt. A nice front kick from the Canadian scores. Two minutes remain. Jourdain with another solid kick. Now a good left hook and then another kick to the body. ‘Air’ is pressuring hard now. That allows Kyler Phillips to clinch and push the Canadian against the cage. One minute remains. Jourdain breaks free and lands a nice kick. Another good body kick. ‘Air’ misses with a spinning back fist but is able to sweep Kyler during a takedown attempt. A good knee from Jourdain as they return to their feet. A front kick from Charles. Now a flying knee that partially connects. The horn sounds to end round two.

The third and final round of the UFC Winnipeg co-headliner begins and Charles Jourdain comes out quickly with a pair of hard kicks. Kyler Phillips replies with a stiff jab to the face. ‘Air’ with a left hook and then another body kick. Phillips with a check hook that lands flush. Both men with right hands in the pocket. Kyler lands another. This is a great fight. Phillips with pressure. He forces the clinch and scores a takedown. Charles Jourdain scrambles right back to his feet. He lands a pair of kicks. Kyler Phillips replies with a good uppercut. Midway point of the round now. Jourdain attempts a flying knee, but Phillips catches him mid-air and lands a takedown. ‘Air’ with a kimura attempt. Kyler seems to be ok and eventually escapes. He’s working from full guard now. Jourdain scrambles and gets back to his feet. He defends a takedown attempt from the American. Jourdain with a trip and then a big kick. He tries the flying knee again. No luck. Jourdain with a big elbow. Phillips is busted open. 30 seconds remain. An elbow from Charles Jourdain. Phillips replies with a 1-2. Jourdain swinging but nothing is landing. The horn sounds. Great fight from both men.
