Islam Makhachev details key difference between welterweight and lightweight contenders ahead of UFC 330

Islam Makhachev believes the welterweight contenders are better than the lightweights.

Makhachev is set to defend his welterweight title for the first time at UFC 330 when he takes on Ian Machado Garry in the main event from Philadelphia. Ahead of his first title defense, he believes the harder fights are at welterweight, and it’s not because of the size. Instead, he believes they are simply better.

“I’m going to defend my title. Welterweight is more competitive division, I have more good opponents, that is why I want to fight more years because we have real contenders in this division,” Makhachev said at the UFC 330 press conference.

It’s a bold take from Makhachev as the lightweight division has been considered one of the best and most stacked divisions in the UFC. Yet, ahead of UFC 330, Makhachev believes the welterweight division is better and has tougher contenders, which is why he’s so eager to continue fighting.

Islam Makhachev shoots down retirement claims

Although Makhachev has said he wants to keep fighting, there were rumors that UFC 330 would be it for him.

However, Islam Makhachev has made it clear that he has no thoughts about retiring and plans to keep on fighting for many more times.

“No, no, no. I told you I like to be UFC champion and we’re still going,” Makhachev said to TMZ Sports. “It’s not about numbers, about age. It’s about your health, how you feel. Not everybody can feel the same at 34. That’s why I feel great. No injuries. I still enjoy the sports, you know. That’s why we will fight again. You will see me many more times.”

For now, the focus is on Ian Machado Garry and defending his welterweight title for the first time in the main event of UFC 330.

Makhachev enters UFC 330 with a record of 28-1 and is coming off a decision win over Jack Della Maddalena.
