Eagles-Cowboys final score: Philadelphia’s defense gives Dallas offense a get-right game
The Philadelphia Eagles are 2-5 after losing to the Dallas Cowboys at Lincoln Financial Field on Monday night. Final score: 38 to 21.
Well, this game wasn’t on total offensive ineptitude for once! The Eagles started the game strong with two touchdown drives and then had another to begin the third quarter. They sputtered at times but that was to be expected with Tanner McKee and a bunch of backups playing on offense.
But Philadelphia’s defense was a problem throughout the night with the Cowboys scoring 38 points and producing 416 yards with 212 coming on the ground. The Eagles’ highly paid defensive line produced zero TFLs, zero sacks, and zero quarterback hits, allowing Dak Prescott to be entirely too comfortable. This was a get-right game for a Cowboys offense that only managed to muster 29 points combined over the past two weeks.
The Eagles have now lost five games in a row for the first time since the 2016 season.
Next up for the Eagles: a road game against the Washington Commanders, who are coming off their bye week.
Read on for a recap and stay tuned for BGN’s postgame coverage. Also, check me out talking about this game on the PHLY Eagles postgame show.
FIRST QUARTER
- The Eagles won the coin toss and elected to defer, per usual. The Cowboys began at their own 35-yard line. Dallas picked up two first downs on their first three plays to move into Eagles territory (a flag was thrown for what seemed like offensive holding but it was picked up). Facing 3rd-and-8, Dak Prescott overthrew CeeDee Lamb while throwing quick against Vic Fangio’s blitz. Brandon Aubrey made a 55-yard field goal attempt … but there was an illegal formation penalty. Instead of taking the points off the board and attempting a 4th-and-3 conversion, Brian Schottenheimer settled for three (coward). Could’ve been worse! EAGLES 0, COWBOYS 3.
- The Eagles took over at their own 35-yard line. The Eagles opened in under center and Tanner McKee completed a pass to Saquon Barkley for a first down! Then Barkley ripped off a 29-yard run where he looked gimpy after running out of bounds. Then McKee hit Makai Lemon for 21 yards! The Cowboys got called for a neutral zone infraction and then Barkley took a run for eight yards to the end zone! Wow! What is this?! Success on offense?! I guess the Dallas defense truly is terrible. But credit to the Eagles for actually taking advantage! EAGLES 7, COWBOYS 3.
- The Cowboys took over at their own 18-yard line and immediately ran for a first down. Riq Woolen broke up a Dak Prescott pass to George Pickens to force third down. Facing 3rd-and-8, Woolen didn’t pick up Ryan Flournoy in coverage quick enough and then missed a tackle on him to allow 35 yards. Volatile player. The Cowboys drove into the red zone with success on the ground. Facing 3rd-and-2, Prescott hit CeeDee Lamb in the end zone with Cooper DeJean trailing. 9-play, 82-yard drive by Dallas. Not a good drive by the defensive line, which got pushed around too often. EAGLES 7, COWBOYS 10.
- The Eagles took over at their own 24-yard line. Facing 3rd-and-6 after picking up one first down and McKee overthrew Hollywood Brown downfield, McKee hit Dallas Goedert just short of the sticks. Facing 4th-and-short, the Eagles lined up for a tush push and McKee fumbled the snap for a Cowboys recovery but Dallas was clearly offside to extend the drive. Good job by Nick Sirianni to be aggressive and keep the offense on the field in that situation, regardless of result, which was good! Two straight Dameon Pierce runs picked up another first down. McKee hit Hollywood Brown (!) for another first down just beyond the marker along the right sideline. Brown had a nice little celebration for his first catch of the season. Facing 3rd-and-10 after Darius Cooper dropped a sure completion (ouch!), Cooper redeemed himself with a screen reception (a successful screen?!) that he took for 17 yards and a first down! Bold decision by him to cut it back inside against the defense instead of taking the safer first down route but it worked out to end the first quarter with a first down in the red zone.
SECOND QUARTER
- Facing 3rd-and-8 after two Barkley runs didn’t pick up much, McKee missed his throw but the Cowboys were flagged for roughing the passer due to Cowboys defender LT Overton getting called for roughing the passer. One play later, Dameon Pierce took a carry to the end zone! 13 plays, 76 yards, TD! Kudos to the Birds for taking advantage of a bad Dallas defense. EAGLES 14, COWBOYS 10.
- The Cowboys had a kick return touchdown (while missing All-Pro returner KaVontae Turpin in this game) nullified by a hold on Ty Robinson. The Cowboys took over at their own 19-yard line instead. Dallas picked up multiple first downs with the Cowboys’ offensive line having their way against Philly’s defensive front. Facing 3rd-and-10 after Jalen Carter knifed into the backfield for a tackle for no gain, Prescott hit Pickens just short of the sticks. Facing 4th-and-1, the Cowboys hurried to the line and the Eagles called a timeout while looking a bit out of sorts. Facing 4th-and-1 for real, the Cowboys were able to easily run for a first down. Dallas picked up another first down with his legs. Facing 3rd-and-3, Prescott stepped up against pressure and delivered a dime to Pickens with Andrew Mukuba trailing along the right sideline of the end zone. Pickens’ second foot was nearly out of bounds. Nearly. But not enough. Gotta tip your hat to the Cowboys on that one. 14-play, 81-yard TD drive. EAGLES 14, COWBOYS 17.
- The Eagles took over at their own 35-yard line. Facing 3rd-and-5 after a screen play didn’t work (Landon Dickerson did not look very good moving in space), Lemon drew a flag for getting hooked to give the Eagles a first down. Then Pierce ran for another first down into Dallas territory. Facing 3rd-and-10, Joey Porter Jr. broke up a McKee back shoulder throw to Brown. Good play by the Cowboys corner. Facing 4th-and-10, Nick Sirianni kept the offense on the field but clearly only to try to draw an offside penalty, which Dallas was never going to fall for. Braden Mann’s punt bounced down to the 2-yard line, where the ball was fielded by Darius Cooper. Nice special teams play.
- The Cowboys took over at their own 2-yard line with 2:28 on the clock and three timeouts to work with. Facing 3rd-and-8 after Quinyon Mitchell broke up a pass that nearly could’ve been a pick six, the Cowboys went with a coward’s draw. That was a gift for this Eagles defense. Big forced three-and-out.
- The Eagles took over at their own 39-yard with 1:39 on the clock and two timeouts to work with after a special teams holding penalty on Elijah Mitchell, which helped Dallas mitigate a bad Cowboys punt. McKee missed Cooper on a throw that was too low. Then McKee threw behind Lemon, who couldn’t make the grab. Then Sirianni called the Eagles’ last remaining timeout with the play clock running down. Facing 3rd-and-10, McKee threw to Lemon for just five yards to bring up a punt.
- The Cowboys took over at their own 13-yard line with 1:14 on the clock and two timeouts to work with. Riq Woolen had a chance to intercept an underthrown Prescott deep pass but he didn’t catch the ball. The Cowboys moved into field goal range without using a timeout. And then Woolen fell down in coverage to allow a 30-yard gain that was fortunately not a touchdown due to Prescott making a bad throw to his wide open target that took the receiver out of bounds. The Cowboys reached 1st-and-goal at the 9-yard line with 0:12 on the clock. Two Prescott throws were thrown out of end zone before the Cowboys settled for a 27-yard field goal make to end the first half. EAGLES 14, COWBOYS 20.
THIRD QUARTER
- The Eagles took over at their own 16-yard line and Barkley immediately ran for a first down before jogging off the field. Facing 3rd-and-5 after Goedert made a nice one-handed grab on a ball thrown behind him, McKee hit a wide open crossing Hollywood Brown for a first down and then some into Cowboys territory. Facing 3rd-and-10, McKee got the ball out quick to Lemon against a blitz. Facing 4th-and-1, Sirianni correctly kept the offense on the field … and McKee hit an unaccounted for Lemon crossing open for a first down. Much-needed conversion. Facing 3rd-and-5 after two Pierce runs, McKee put the ball on Goedert at the marker for a first down. Facing 3rd-and-3 after two Pierce runs, Pierce cut back and picked up a first down at the 2-yard line. Markel Bell gave up a TFL to Quinnen Williams and then McKee rolled right and had no one to throw to for a throwaway. Facing 3rd-and-goal, McKee hit Lemon on a quick slant for a touchdown! Good catch in traffic by the rookie WR. Very strong 17-play, 84-yard TD drive that took 9:16 off the clock to begin the second half. EAGLES 21, COWBOYS 20.
- The Cowboys took over at their own 39-yard line. Facing 3rd-and-9, Lamb dropped a first down reception but Woolen was called for defensive holding. The Cowboys ran for a first down past midfield. Woolen gave up a first down reception into field goal range. Facing 3rd-and-2 in the high red zone, the Cowboys picked up a first down with a run up the middle. Prescott dropped a dime to Lamb with Woolen trailing (Cowboys were clearly going after No. 2) for a touchdown. And then Prescott took a QB draw to the end zone for an easy two-point conversion. EAGLES 21, COWBOYS 28.
- The Eagles took over at their own 15-yard line and Tyler Steen got called for holding. And then McKee took a sack.
FOURTH QUARTER
- Facing 3rd-and-15, McKee threw short of the sticks to Goedert to bring up a punt.
- Braden Mann’s punt went 61 yards with Kelee Ringo making a good ST tackle in coverage to force the Cowboys to take over at their own 16-yard line. DeJean got flagged for blatant pass interference to give the Cowboys a first down. Jeremiah Trotter Jr. got blocked off the ball to allow a 34-yard Cowboys run. Dallas moved into the red zone. Facing 3rd-and-8, the Cowboys went with a fullback run that should’ve set up a shorter fourth down but the Cowboys oddly decided to settle for a 24-yard field goal instead. Another gift by Dallas. EAGLES 21, COWBOYS 31.
- The Eagles took over at their own 34-yard line. McKee hit Goedert quick off the RPO for a first down. Elijah Mitchell came into the game with Pierce getting banged up and caught a dump off for a catch-and-run first down. But then McKee threw a pick to DeMarvion Overshown with the Cowboys linebacker jumping Goedert’s short route. Welp.
- The Cowboys took over at their own 34-yard line. Facing 3rd-and-3, the Eagles stopped the Cowboys’ run short of the marker. Facing 4th-and-1, the Cowboys kept the offense on the field but only to try to draw an offside penalty before taking the delay of game.
- The Eagles took over at their own 16-yard line. McKee got sacked with Dickerson getting beat by Williams. Facing 3rd-and-17, McKee checked down to Mitchell. Facing 4th-and-9, McKee threw downfield to Brown, who initially looked over the wrong shoulder.
- The Cowboys took over at the Eagles’ 16-yard line. Facing 3rd-and-9, the Cowboys ran for a first down. Really? On 3rd-and-9? Weaksauce. The Eagles took their final timeout at 3:51. Two plays later, the Cowboys found the end zone on the ground to seal the game. EAGLES 38, COWBOYS 21.
- The Eagles’ offense gained some garbage time yards before the clock expired.
EAGLES LINEUP NOTES
- Interesting note on defense:
- Elijah Mitchell and Dameon Pierce lined up at kick returner with Britain Covey getting banged up.
- Makai Lemon lined up at punt returner with Britain Covey getting banged up.
EAGLES INJURY NEWS
- Saquon Barkley, who entered Monday night with a hamstring injury, looked gimpy after his first run of the game. He missed a play before coming back in and still looking less than 100% … but was able to score on a touchdown run nevertheless. He never really looked right as he continued to enter and exit the game throughout the night. Barkley was ruled questionable to return with a BACK injury in the fourth quarter.
- Britain Covey (knee) got hurt in the first quarter and was originally ruled questionable to return. He was later ruled out.
- Jalyx Hunt entered the medical tent in the second quarter.
- Quinyon Mitchell got banged up late in the second quarter. He re-entered the game after missing a few plays.
- Dameon Pierce got banged up in the fourth quarter.
- Moro Ojomo got banged up in the fourth quarter.
