The Denver Broncos are looking to trade up and draft a quarterback days after acquiring Zach Wilson from the New York Jets, according to The Athletic’s Dianna Russini.

“Expect the Broncos to continue working behind the scenes to see if they have enough to move up in the draft for a QB, otherwise all other options are on the table,” Russini wrote. “I was told this front office is exploring it all.”

The Broncos hold the No. 12 pick in the 2024 draft.

Denver received Wilson from the Jets Monday in exchange for a late-round pick swap, per NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport and Tom Pelissero.

Wilson was benched in two straight seasons with the Jets and could become a third-string option in Denver if the Broncos select a top signal-caller in the draft.

The Broncos are looking for a new starting quarterback after taking on the largest dead cap hit in NFL history in order to move on from veteran signal-caller Russell Wilson, leaving Jarrett Stidham and his four career starts atop the Denver depth chart.

Denver head coach Sean Payton has previously said this doesn’t mean the team is guaranteed to draft a quarterback in the first round.

“Do we have to draft a quarterback? You’d say it sure looks like we have to draft a quarterback,” Payton said last Thursday, per NFL.com’s Eric Edholm. “And yet, it’s got to be the right fit, the right one. And if we had the tip sheets as to who everyone else was taking it’d be easier to answer that question. And so, that’s the puzzle here.”

General manager George Paton then stressed that the Broncos would consider trading a future first-round pick in order to bolster an impact position “like quarterback” in the upcoming draft, per NBC Sports’ Mike Florio.

“I would just say if it’s a player that you think can change the landscape of your organization moving forward, like quarterback, then you do whatever it takes to get him,” Paton said, per Florio. “If there’s consensus in the building, a love in the building, you’re aggressive and you try to get him. It doesn’t mean you’re going to get him, but you try. So we’re open to everything. We’re wide open.”

The Broncos have spoken to the teams drafting above and below them to try and determine who will be left on the board when the No. 12 pick comes up, according to Edholm.

The latest 2024 NFL Mock Draft from the B/R NFL Scouting Department projects four quarterbacks being selected within the top five picks as USC’s Caleb Williams, LSU’s Jayden Daniels, UNC’s Drake Maye and Michigan’s J.J. McCarthy go off the board early.

If the Broncos are aiming for one of these quarterbacks, Paton will likely have to trade up. If not, other 2024 NFL Draft Big Board quarterbacks like Oregon’s Bo Nix, South Carolina’s Spencer Rattler and Washington’s Michael Penix Jr. could be available at No. 12.

Either way, there’s pressure on Paton to land on this pick with the Broncos back in the first round for the first time in three drafts and looking to move on from a costly miss on the 2022 Wilson trade.
