Carlos Ulberg shuts down Jiri Prochazka rematch after former champ’s post-fight ‘mercy narrative’
Newly minted UFC light heavyweight champion Carlos Ulberg lost some respect for Jiri Prochazka following UFC 327.
The UFC light heavyweight division has a new champion as Carlos Ulberg finished former titleholder Jiri Prochazka by TKO in the UFC 327 main event. It was a miraculous come-from-behind victory for Ulberg, after suffering a nasty leg injury from multiple early kicks from Prochazka and overcoming it with a nasty finish.
After the UFC 327 main event, Prochazka claimed he showed Ulberg ‘mercy’ after noticing his opponent’s leg ailment, alluding to his tentativeness as a major reason for getting finished against Ulberg. Prochazka and Ulberg didn’t shake hands after their fight at UFC 327, adding fuel to the fire of their potentially budding rivalry.
After the odd end to the UFC 327 main event, some speculated that the UFC could book an immediate rematch between Prochazka and Ulberg. But the new champion has zero interest in making it happen after how Prochazka handled defeat.
Carlos Ulberg calls out Jiri Prochazka’s ‘b*****’ comments after UFC 327
During a recent interview on The Ariel Helwani Show, Ulberg responded to Prochazka’s post-fight remarks.
“Bull****, total bull**** — that’s fear,” Ulberg said of Prochazka’s comments.
“That was fear that he had. That wasn’t any kind of mercy. That’s the difference between a champion and someone who’s just playing for the crowd. There was no mercy in there. He was full of fear, hesitation, and that’s what got him clipped. He’s a pretender, and he knew that I knew he’s a pretender. I’ve always known it. That’s not a real fighter, no. That’s just someone who’s trying to play to the crowd.
“Once people to believe a narrative, when that word merciful was fed into his mouth, that was his excuse, so that he could hopefully get a rematch. There is no way he gets that rematch,” Ulberg continued. “I don’t see him getting past [Magomed] Ankalaev. He gets his ass beat by Ankalaev.” (h/t MMA Mania)
As of this writing, Prochazka hasn’t responded to Ulberg’s remarks. The vacant title loss came after Prochazka earned recent wins over Jamahal Hill and Khalil Rountree Jr.
